Jong Yi is a Korean American author who has worked as a nurse for the past eighteen years. As an Asian American living in the U.S. for the last thirty-six years, she has experienced racism firsthand. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she knew things were not going to get any easier. Discrimination against nurses of color became worse and worse. She was desperately concerned. It is her belief that the pandemic was managed poorly in the hospitals and that hospital administrators used the opportunity for greater profit. After experiencing this major event in her life, she felt compelled to share her experiences by writing her book Fighting to Breathe, a work of fiction, to raise public awareness of how racism affects everyone in healthcare. In this poignant interview with Senior Anchor/Producer Tannaz Alesafar, Jong explains why she wrote the book and why she believes that racism is so rampant against healthcare providers of all races, genders, and cultural backgrounds presently in all areas of healthcare delivery.
